A ‘man overboard’ is most likely to occur when the crew are moving into/out of the boat or around the boat. The exact circumstances will determine the best course of action to recover the casualty and the boat lead may choose to vary the generic procedure outlined here.
(1) Stow

- Announcing ‘man overboard’.
- Communicating with the casualty and throwing a buoyancy aid if needed.
- STOWing oars 3 and 4.
- Configuring the boat with oars one and two manned and the two most able crew at the rear of the boat.
(2) Throw
- Bring the casualty alongside the rear of the boat using the THROW line or otherwise.
- Ensure that the casualty is supported alongside the boat with their head above water.
(3) Low
- Using the weight of the crew LOWer the appropriate gunnel close to the water. The crew in positions 1 and 2 should be instructed to shift their position if the gunnel is in danger of going under water.
- Pull the casualty’s arms to bring them onboard or roll them onboard by bringing their legs over the gunnel.
(4) Row
- Assess the casualty and call Emergency Services if necessary.
- ROW to the nearest suitable location for recovering the casualty to land in order to provide any necessary first aid and/or rendezvous with emergency services.
